We are living in a unique time in the history of the Church. Some have said that the era of Christendom is over and we now live in a time of mission, where we need to evangelize a world that has decided it does not need God.
But you and I know we need God, because without Him we cannot make it. We have discovered the rich symbolism of the ancient practice of veiling in church and have decided to take part in it as a way of honoring the Lord, like our Blessed Mother, as Lord of our lives. For some of us, it has been years. Others are brand new to it and still others, discerning or in between.
Regardless of where we are in this journey, we are all called to fulfill the significance of the veil in our lives: to say "yes" to God with greater love and fidelity every day.
In conversation with my godfather a few weeks ago, he pointed out the need to do as St. Paul did: to proclaim Jesus crucified. Jesus who, in His fidelity to the Father of truth, goodness, and beauty, showed us the true meaning of love through the cross and made it possible for us to participate in His love by being open to receiving it and then giving it in return.
It's a high calling, and I often tremble at the thought of imitating Jesus. Like our sister in Christ, St. Therese of Lisieux, I feel so keenly that I am not capable of the kind of sacrifices that Jesus and the great saints made.
But thanks be to God, in St. Therese He raised up for us an example of sanctity so accessible to each of us. Her "Little Way" became a fitting example through which we, too, can proclaim Jesus with our lives by doing everything, even the smallest things, with great love.
"You know well enough that Our Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our actions, nor even at their difficulty, but at the love with which we do them." – St. Therese of Lisieux
What a great consolation! Let's follow her example today and everyday as we allow Jesus to show us in what little ways we can participate in His great love.
